"Our goal is to compete for championships, and we are not making progress in that regard," said Athletic Director Pete Boone. "It's time for our team to have new leadership and a new direction."

Boone said Nutt will finish out the season at Mississippi. Nutt was hired Nov. 28, 2007, and took a team that was 3-8 in 2007 to a 9-4 record in 2008. The Rebels were 9-4 again in 2009, winning the Cotton Bowl for a second consecutive year, but slumped to 4-8 last year. He has a 24-23 record at Ole Miss.

Nutt previously coached at Murray State and Boise State before leading Arkansas to a 75-48 over 10 seasons. In 19 seasons as a head coach he has a 135-93 record.

The (Jackson) Clarion-Ledger said Nutt, who had three years remaining on his contract, will receive a $6 million buyout from Mississippi.
