TV Teddy: College hoops official turns his back as UNC's Joel Berry II complains

By Alex Butler

Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Referee Ted Valentine had no time for Joel Berry II's complaints during Florida State's 81-80 win against North Carolina.

The Tar Heels and Seminoles battled in an ACC affair Wednesday at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Fla. Berry was running down the court with 7:37 remaining in the second half. Florida State's Terance Man held his arm as he tried to run free to get open for a pass. Berry's teammate Kenny Williams still chucked a lob his way, but the ball sailed over his head and went out of bounds.

Berry walked over to Valentine to complain that he was fouled. Valentine signaled a Florida State possession, but Berry disagreed. The senior walked over to Valentine to discuss the matter, but Valentine turned his back, facing the crowd and pretending Berry wasn't talking to him. Valentine eventually turned after Berry put the ball down and walked away.

The referee is often referred to as "TV Teddy" because of his affinity for theatrics.

Valentine was also heard talking to Florida State fans during the game. Berry scored a game-high 28 points and had two rebounds and two steals in the loss. Braian Angola led the Seminoles with 20 points and five rebounds.
