Michigan State coach Tom Izzo makes cameo on 'Judge Mathis,' loves it

By Alex Butler

Dec. 5 (UPI) -- College basketball coaching icon Tom Izzo appeared on a recent airing of Judge Mathis, and he appeared to really enjoy it.

The footage debuted on Tuesday. It featured a man and a woman in a dispute. The woman discussed the man talking about her being from Ohio.

The man, who is from Michigan, is an Ohio State fan.

"The good news is, my favorite coach in college, who happens to be here today, they routinely...basketball coach. They routinely beat Ohio state. You know who I'm talking about? I'll let you say his name Mr. Ohio State," Mathis said.

The man never uttered his name, so the judge helped him out.

"Tom Izzo," Mathis said. "Right behind you."

The Michigan State coach, who couldn't stop smiling, waved at the man.

"He's a great man," Mathis said. "My daughter was a student assistant to him and she finished at the top of her class and is now a lawyer so you best send your children to Michigan State. How about that?"

"About 80 to 90 percent of his basketball players graduate...," Mathis said.

Judge Greg Mathis posted a photo with Izzo on his Twitter account in August, during the filming of the episode.

"Hosted @MSU_Basketball Coach Tom Izzo at my show recently," he wrote. "@CoachJim4UM I hear you are a Judge Judy fan. Izzo wins! #GOGREEN."

Mathis was referencing Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh's love for Judge Judy. The Detroit Free Press reported that Harbaugh had about 60 episodes of the show on his DVR. The Harbaugh's have also attended a taping of the show and enjoyed lunch and a game of gin with Judith Sheindlin.

The No. 3 Spartans face Rutgers at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Izzo's squad is coming off of an 86-57 win against Nebraska.

Judge Mathis is taped in Chicago.
