Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Former UCLA star Ray Young III collapsed on a basketball court last week and is now out of a coma.

His friends and family have started a GoFundMe page to aid his medical and rehabilitation fund.

Young, 37, was playing basketball with his friends when his heart stopped. He fell to the ground and was motionless with no heartbeat and was unresponsive, according to the GoFundeMe page.

Several players and gym staff gave Young CPR and medics arrived to revive him. He was then rushed to the emergency room in critical condition.

"Just a couple days ago, he awoke from a near two-day coma," the page says. "He is expected to recover, but things were definitely touch-and-go for a while. His family and close friends have remained by his side. Nothing short of a miracle has kept Ray with us. We've been informed by his doctors that survival isn't the outcome 95% of the time."

"We are all incredibly grateful that Ray made it through, but now he's going to need help with recovery and rehabilitation. Fortunately, Ray does have basical medical insurance, but it doesn't cover certain critical things like physical and neuro-rehabilitation therapy. Also, Ray won't be able to work for months, but bills are still due!"

The campaign had raised more than $33,000 of its $100,000 goal as of Thursday afternoon.

Young's family offered an update on his condition on Wednesday.

"Ray is doing really well," the update said. "He's begun some physical therapy, is back on his vegan diet, and everyone is trying to force him to take it easy--if you know Ray, you know exactly what I mean :) We're still at the hospital and expect to be here through the week. Today is a big day. Ray is having surgery to implant a defibrillator on his heart. We expect that procedure to go well, but please do send your prayers Ray's way."

Young played four seasons at UCLA. He averaged 10.1 points and 2.0 assists per game during his senior season for the Bruins. He averaged 7.7 points per game in the 2005 NBA Summer League for the Golden State Warriors. He also suited up for the New Orleans Hornets.
