Rhode Island extended the contract of basketball coach Dan Hurley two years through the 2023-24 season after he guided the Rams to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1999.

Hurley, 44, is entering his sixth season at Rhode Island. He has led the Rams to two postseason appearances -- also the NIT in the 2014-15 campaign -- and owns an 87-73 coaching record at the school. He is 125-95 overall.

"I appreciate the opportunity to continue to lead the Rhode Island men's basketball program. So much goes into building a championship culture and I am proud of the efforts we have made in all facets of our program," Hurley said in a statement.

Rhode Island posted a 25-9 record last season (13-5 in Atlantic 10) and won the Atlantic 10 Tournament title en route to earning a No. 11 seed in the NCAA Tourney.

The Rams defeated sixth-seeded Creighton 84-72 in the NCAA Tournament's opening round but fell to third-seeded Oregon 75-72 in the second.

Hurley also spent two seasons coaching at Wagner, going 38-22.
