Florida jumps to second in basketball poll; Syracuse still No. 1

MCLEAN, Va., Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Syracuse continues to be the unanimous No. 1 team in the USA Today coaches' basketball poll but Florida has passed undefeated Wichita State for the second spot.

Syracuse (25-0) for a third consecutive week pulls in all 32 first-place mentions from the Board of Coaches.

Wichita State (27-0) is also perfect on the year and had been ranked second the last two weeks before Florida (23-2) jumps from fourth to second, sending the Shockers to the No. 3 rankings.

Arizona (23-2) drops from third to fourth after an overtime loss at archrival Arizona State and Louisville (21-4) moves to No. 5.

Arizona was among 12 Top 25 teams -- five in the Top 10 -- that lost last week. Pittsburgh dropped two games -- although one of those was by two points to Syracuse -- and is forced from the rankings. Also out is Oklahoma, which makes room for Connecticut and UCLA to return to the Top 25.

Creighton defeated Villanova 101-80 Sunday, a result that lifts Creighton five places and drops Villanova five. Only one other team -- Iowa State falling to 19th from No. 14 -- had as big a change.

Duke (20-5) joins Louisville in improving their rankings three spots as the Blue Devils are sixth. San Diego State (22-2) slips two places to seventh and Kansas (19-6) is off one to No. 8. Cincinnati (23-3) and St. Louis (23-2) are both up two places to ninth and 10th, respectively.

Villanova (22-3) comes in 11th with Creighton (21-4) is 12th. Virginia (21-5) continues its climb and is No. 13 with Michigan State (21-5) down four spots to 14th and Iowa (19-6) remaining at No. 15.

Kentucky (19-6) takes the 16th spot while Texas (20-5) goes to No. 17 and Wisconsin (21-5) improves to 18th. Iowa State (19-5) drops to 19 with Michigan (18-7) voted 20th.

Connecticut (20-5), last ranked Dec. 30, jumps in at 21st followed by in order, Gonzaga (23-4), Ohio State (20-6), Memphis (19-6) and UCLA (20-5).

The schedule this week has a rematch of one of the games of the year. Syracuse on Feb. 1 beat Duke 91-89 in overtime. This time the game is Saturday at Duke.

Texas has a road games against ranked opponents in Iowa State on Tuesday at Kansas Saturday. Also Saturday Louisville travels to Cincinnati and Wisconsin plays at Iowa. The second Michigan State-Michigan game of the season is Sunday at Ann Arbor, Mich., Michigan won the first meeting 80-75.
