COL BKB: Michigan State 84, Purdue 61

EAST LANSING, Mich., Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Gary Harris scored a career-best 22 points and No. 18 Michigan State shot 81.8 percent from the free throw line Saturday in an 84-61 win over Purdue.

Travis Trice score 12 points in Michigan State's (12-3, 1-1 Big Ten) conference home opener.

Branden Dawson added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Spartans, who blew the game open with 48 points after posting a close 36-30 lead at the break. Keith Appling had six points but also notched a season-high eight assists.

A.J. Hammons led Purdue (7-7, 1-1) with 20 points and seven rebounds. D.J. Byrd scored 14 for the Boilermakers.
