COL BKB: Lehigh 75, Duke 70

GREENSBORO, N.C., March 17 (UPI) -- A 30-point effort from C.J. McCollum Friday and clutch free throw shooting gave Lehigh a historic 75-70 upset of Duke in the NCAA Tournament.

Prior to Friday, there had been only four wins in the history of the tournament by teams seeded 15th in their region. In one evening that number grew to six with victories by both Norfolk State and Lehigh.

Norfolk State, in its first NCAA game, defeated Missouri. Lehigh won its first NCAA tourney contest in its fifth attempt and sent one of college basketball's traditional powerhouses to an early exit.

Lehigh will play in the third round Sunday against Xavier, the 10th seed in the South Region and a 67-63 winner over Notre Dame Friday.

The Mountain Hawks led for the final 8:30 of the contest, but Duke was within three points with 29 seconds left after Austin Rivers made 2-of-3 shots from the foul line.

Jordan Hamilton then scored on a layup for Lehigh and when Duke's Quinn Cook missed a 3-point attempt with 18 seconds left the Blue Devils were all but beaten.

Lehigh (27-7) secured the victory by making 6-of-6 from the line in the final 16 seconds -- two each from Gabe Knutson, Mackey McKnight and McCollum. Knutson finished with 17 points and McKnight had 11 for the Mountain Hawks, who defeated regular-season champion Bucknell in the Patriot Conference tournament title game.
