DAYTON, Ohio, March 15 (UPI) -- Victor Rudd hit 7-of-10 shots from the field Wednesday and took part in a huge defensive effort that gave South Florida a 65-54 NCAA win over California.
The Bulls held California to 13 points in the first half and limited the Golden Bears to 36 percent shooting, while winning an NCAA Tournament game for the first time.
South Florida will take on Temple in Nashville Friday in a second-round matchup.
No South Florida player scored an average of 10 points a game this season but four players reached double digits against California. Rudd scored 15 points, Anthony Collins had 12, Augustus Gilchrist had 11 and Jawanza Poland produced 10.
The Bulls (21-13) were the No. 6 seed in the Big East Conference Tournament and lost in the quarterfinals to Notre Dame.
Harper Kamp had 19 points for California (24-10), which lost in the semifinals of the Pac-12 Tournament to eventual-champion Colorado.
