Maryland earns chance at Tar Heels

ATLANTA, March 8 (UPI) -- Terrell Stoglin's 25 points paced Maryland to an 82-60 romp over Wake Forest Thursday to set up a meeting with No. 4 North Carolina in the ACC Tournament.

North Carolina State and Virginia Tech also advanced to the quarterfinals with first-round victories.

Maryland defeated Wake Forest for the sixth straight time in the conference's post-season tourney and improved to 17-14 for the season. The Terrapins lost two regular-season games to North Carolina by a combined 31 points.

Nick Faust added 19 points and five rebounds for Maryland while Wake Forest (13-18) was paced by 22 points from Travis McKie. A 20-2 Maryland run in the second half put the game away.

North Carolina State reached a quarterfinal date with Virginia by downing Boston College 78-57 and Virginia Tech pulled off a mild upset with a 68-63 victory over Clemson. The Hokies will face second-seeded and sixth-ranked Duke Friday.

Miami wrapped up the opening round of the oldest conference tournament in the NCAA by defeating Georgia Tech. The Hurricanes will play Florida State in the quarterfinals.

Scott Wood scored 22 points and North Carolina State produced the game's first 14 points against Boston College, which suffered 19 turnovers. The Wolfpack (21-11) came up with 11 points and 11 rebounds from C.J. Leslie.

Ryan Anderson had 22 points for the Eagles (9-22).

Erick Green's 3-pointer touched off a late nine-point run by 10th-seeded Virginia Tech that broke open a tie contest and gave the Hokies a victory over No. 7 seeded Clemson.

Green scored 24 points to lead the Hokies (16-16). Clemson (16-15) got 15 points from reserve Devin Coleman.

Miami trailed by a point at the break against Georgia Tech in the closing game of the evening, but limited the Yellow Jackets to 15 points in the second half.

Shane Larkin scored 12 points to lead Miami (19-11), which won despite shooting only 33 percent from the field. Mfon Udofia had 13 for the Yellow Jackets (11-20).
