COL BKB: Virginia 52, Miami (Fla.) 51

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Virginia's Mike Scott scored 23 points Saturday and the 23rd-ranked Cavaliers extended their best start in 30 years with a 52-51 win over Miami of Florida.

The Cavaliers (14-1, 1-0 ACC) used a tight defense and a stop by Jontel Evans on the final possession to log the win, which represented their best start since going 27-1 to open the 1981-82 season when they were led by Ralph Sampson.

Evans put pressure on Miami's Durand Scott in the closing seconds to force a miss on a potential game-winning shot and preserve the victory in the ACC opener for both schools.

Miami (9-5, 0-1) got 14 points and 10 rebounds from Kenny Kadji, but it wasn't enough to avoid the Hurricanes' first loss in five games.
