ACC to expand conference hoops season

GREENSBORO, N.C., Dec. 15 (UPI) -- Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford said Thursday basketball teams in his league would play 18 conference games beginning next season.

It will become the longest conference season among major NCAA basketball leagues.

Both the men's and women's conference season will be made up of 16 games this season. The women increased their number of conference games this year from 14 to 16 and another increase will take place for the 2012-13 campaign.

With the addition of Pittsburgh and Syracuse next year, the ACC will expand to 14 teams.

"Our member institutions have been talking about this increase for awhile and knowing our league will be expanding to 14 in the future, we've decided to move to an 18-game conference schedule next year, regardless of our membership number," Swofford said. "The additional conference games create a more equitable schedule and we've received significant feedback from our fans for more conference games."
