John Tavares, Canadian forward, out of Olympics with knee injury

Canada will face the United States in the Olympic hockey semifinals on Friday.

SOCHI , Russia, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- John Tavares won't be playing in Canada's upcoming Olympic hockey game against the United States.

According to SB Nation, the 23-year-old ice hockey forward injured his knee after falling on the ground and hitting the boards during the second period of Canada's quarterfinal game against Latvia, forcing him to miss all upcoming games in the Olympics.

The New York Islanders star remained on the bench for some time after the fall, but eventually left. He did not return for the second half of the game.

After Wednesday's win, Canada will go on to face the United States in the event's semifinals on Friday.
