The NCAA has handed down sanctions to the University of Oregon football program Wednesday, following a 27-month investigation in which the college sports authority examined the program's use of scouting services.
The program will lose one scholarship for each of the next two years, a three-year probation period, a ban on recruiting services, a disassociation with the recruiting service provider, and a reduction of evaluation days.
Former Oregon coach Chip Kelly received an 18-month show-cause order and Josh Gibson, the former assistant director of operations, received a 1-year show-cause order. Both Kelly and the university agreed they had failed to properly monitor the program.
Oregon was in trouble over illegal scouting and recruitment practices, including cash and free lodging provided to a prospect by Complete Scouting Service director Will Lyles.
With the sanction against Kelly, the new coach, Mark Helfrich, is free to go about business as usual.
