Ballpark sinkhole cancels batting practice for Rangers

Batting practice was canceled after a broken water pipe under the Rangers Ballpark infield created a sinkhole behind the pitcher's mound.

Texas pitching coach Mike Maddux said the hole was the size of a large trash can.

The Rangers and their upcoming opponent, the Cleveland Indians, were slated to have on-field batting practice before the game on Tuesday.

The pipe burst with just two hours remaining before first pitch, but stadium workers began work right away to get the field back to playing standards. The hole was big enough for three maintenance workers to have their heads in it at once.

In the meantime, the teams moved practice to the indoor batting cages. The grounds crew was able to complete the work in two hours and was approved by Texas manager Ron Washington.
