UPI has contacted the Dallas Police Department and the Dallas Mavericks for comment and confirmation.

According to the reports, Armstrong is accused of hitting a woman identified as his girlfriend with a gun and threatening to shoot her.

Police said the alleged assault followed an argument between the couple.

The Dallas Morning News reported the pair had been drinking and the argument erupted after Armstrong's girlfriend saw a text from another woman on his phone.

Dallas County, according to CBS News, said Armstrong was taken into police custody and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Larry Taylor, Armstrong's attorney, told WFAA on Sunday night that they were conducting their own investigation into the incident.

"Mr. Armstrong has been an upstanding member of the Dallas community during his playing days and as a coach. We will have more to say about this incident in the coming days," Taylor said.

Meanwhile, the Dallas Mavericks confirmed to UPI that it is aware of an incident "involving a member of our staff."

The team said in an emailed statement that it was "gathering all relevant information surrounding the incident."

"We take this matter seriously," it said. "The employee has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings."

Armstrong, 56, has been an assistant coach for the Mavericks for 10 seasons.

During his 14-season NBA career, Armstrong played for the Orlando Magic, the New Orleans Pelicans, the Mavericks, the Indiana Pacers and the former New Jersey Nets.
