College football: Washington to hire Steve Belichick as defensive coordinator

Feb. 5 (UPI) -- The University of Washington is expected to hire Steve Belichick, the son of former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, as a defensive coordinator.

Sources told ESPN, 247Sports and The Athletic about the move Sunday night and Monday morning. Washington has yet to make an official announcement.

Belichick, 36, joined the Patriots staff in 2012. The former Rutgers lacrosse and football player worked as a defensive assistant until 2015. He later served as a coach for safeties, the secondary and outside linebackers.

He worked alongside former defensive coordinators and assistants Matt Patricia, Brian Flores, Josh Boyer and Patrick Graham, among others, during his time with the Patriots.

Belichick was the Patriots' outside linebackers coach for the past four seasons.

He will now be part of a new-look Huskies coaching staff, following the departure of head coach Kalen DeBoer, who took the head coaching job at Alabama. The Huskies hired former Arizona coach Jedd Fisch last month to replace DeBoer.

Fisch also hired Brennan Carroll, the son of former Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, in January to be the Huskies' offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

Ryan Grubb was Huskies offensive coordinator in 2023, when they owned one of the top offenses in the country and advanced to the College Football Playoff title game before star quarterback Michael Penix Jr.

Grubb joined DeBoer at Alabama as part of the Crimson Tide's reshuffled staff, following the retirement of longtime head coach Nick Saban.

William Inge and Chuck Morrell worked as co-defensive coordinators for the Huskies in 2023-24.
