Oct. 11 (UPI) -- University of Miami quarterback D'Eriq King is going to have shoulder surgery and will miss the rest of the 2021 season, Hurricanes football coach Manny Diaz said Monday on his radio show. Diaz told WQAM that freshman Tyler Van Dyke, who started the last two games, will remain the Hurricanes' starting quarterback for the rest of the season.

King sustained the right shoulder injury in the third quarter of the team's 38-17 loss to Michigan State on Sept. 18 in Miami Gardens, Fla. Diaz said the Hurricanes knew the next day that King most likely would need surgery.
"There was a narrow avenue that he could rehab and potentially come back and be able to play this season without needing a surgery," Diaz said. "So, we were going down that road. That's what D'Eriq wanted, to go down that road.
"That guy [King], as you saw in the Michigan State game, would do anything to get back on the field and be able to play for us. But we're now, however, many weeks out, and I think in D'Eriq's mind, we've exhausted that opportunity, that possibility.
"So, he's going to get the surgery on his shoulder and it's Tyler Van Dyke's team."
King completed 81 of 122 passes for 767 yards, three scores and four interceptions in three games this season. The Redshirt senior completed 211 of 329 passes for 2,686 yards, 23 scores and five interceptions in 11 games in 2020.
Van Dyke completed 25 of 41 passes for 473 yards and four scores in his three appearances this season. He did not throw an interception. He completed 15 of 29 passes for 203 yards, with a passing score and a rushing touchdown, in the Hurricanes' 30-28 loss to Virginia on Sept. 30 in Miami Gardens.
Hurricanes backup quarterback Jake Garcia sustained an ankle injury in the team's Sept. 25 win over Central Connecticut State. Diaz said the freshman underwent surgery and is out until at least November.
The Hurricanes (2-3) will face North Carolina (3-3) at 3:30 p.m. EDT Saturday at Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
