College football kickoff, golf playoff, NFL preseason pack weekend sports schedule

Aug. 27 (UPI) -- The start of the college football season, the PGA Tour's FedExCup Playoffs and NFL preseason games lead the weekend sports schedule. MLB and MLS regular season games and two NASCAR races at Daytona also fill the slate.

YouTube star Jake Paul also takes on former UFC champion Tyron Woodley in a boxing bout Sunday in Cleveland.

Champaign, Ill., takes center stage Saturday, as Illinois hosts Nebraska in the first game of the 2021 college football season. Nebraska is a seven-point favorite in the Big Ten matchup, which airs at 1 p.m. EDT on Fox.

Most of the other 129 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision teams start their seasons over the next two weeks.

College football kickoff

Fresno State hosts UConn in the second college football game of the season at 2 p.m. EDT Saturday on CBSSN. UCLA hosts Hawaii in the next game at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN.

Alcorn State takes on North Carolina Center at 7 p.m. EDT Saturday on ESPN. San Jose State hosts Southern Utah in the final game of the weekend at 10 p.m. Saturday on CBSSN.

The 2021 college football campaign continues with one game Wednesday, 16 games Thursday, eight games Sept 3 and 57 games Sept. 4.

Ohio State, the No. 4 team in the coaches poll, battles Minnesota at 8 p.m. EDT Sept. 2 on Fox. No. 3 Oklahoma faces Tulane at noon EDT Sept. 4 on ABC.

No. 1 Alabama, the defending national champion, kicks off its season against No. 16 Miami at 3:30 p.m. EDT Sept. 4 on ABC.

No. 2 Clemson faces No. 5 Georgia at 7:30 p.m. EDT Sept. 4 on ABC. No. 7 Notre Dame battles Florida State in its first game of the season at 7:30 p.m. EDT Sept. 5 on ABC.

Golf playoff

The 2021 BMW Championship, the second leg of the PGA Tour's FedExCup Playoffs, runs from Thursday through Sunday at Caves Valley Country Club in Owings Mills, Md.

World No. 1 Jon Rahm is the favorite to win the tournament. No. 4 Xander Schauffele, No. 2 Dustin Johnson, No. 5 Justin Thomas and No. 12 Jordan Spieth are among the other Top 5 favorites.

No. 9 Tony Finau jumped to the top spot in the FedExCup Playoffs with his win Monday at the Northern Trust, the first leg of the playoff.

Top 125 players in the FedExCup rankings qualified for the Northern Trust. The Top 70 golfers in the FedExCup standings after the Northern Trust advanced to this week's tournament.

The Top 30 in the standings after the BMW Championship advance to the PGA Tour Championship, the season finale.

Rahm beat Johnson in a one-hole playoff to win last year's BMW Championship, but Johnson went on to claim the FedExCup title. He also claimed the $15 million prize for last year's championship.

The 2021 BMW Championship airs on Golf Channel and NBC.

NFL preseason finales

The final slate of games for the NFL's shortened 2021 preseason airs from Friday through Sunday on NFL Network, CBS and NBC.

More starters are expected to play this week as teams prepare for the Sept. 9 regular season kickoff. Several position battles remain for several teams to determine which players win starting jobs, while others attempt to make the final cut for 53-man rosters.

The Kansas City Chiefs host the Minnesota Vikings in the first nationally televised game this weekend. That matchup airs at 8 p.m. EDT Friday on NFL Network.

The Green Bay Packers face the Buffalo Bills at 1 p.m. EDT Saturday on NFL Network. The Tennessee Titans host the Chicago Bears on the same network at 7 p.m. in Nashville.

The Seattle Seahawks host the Los Angeles Chargers in Saturday's nightcap at 10 p.m. EDT on NFL Network. The Jacksonville Jaguars take on the Dallas Cowboys at 1 p.m. EDT Sunday on NFL Network.

The Cincinnati Bengals host the Miami Dolphins at 4 p.m. EDT Sunday on CBS. The San Francisco 49ers host the Las Vegas Raiders at 4 p.m. on NFL Network. The New York Giants battle the New England Patriots at 6 p.m. on NFL Network.

The Atlanta Falcons host the Cleveland Browns in the final game of the 2021 NFL preseason. That matchup airs at 8 p.m. EDT Sunday on NBC.
