Olympics: Team USA gymnast Kara Eaker tests positive for COVID-19

July 19 (UPI) -- Kara Eaker, an alternate on the United States women's gymnastics team for the 2020 Summer Games, tested positive for COVID-19 and is in quarantine at her hotel in Japan, Eaker's father said Monday.

"I know she's disappointed, but at this point she says she's kind of bored because she's stuck in her room not being able to do anything, can't practice or anything like that," Mark Eaker told KMBC.

"She says she's bored and just looking forward to coming home. The biggest disappointment is that this takes her out of it completely."

The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee and USA Gymnastics and the city of Inzai, Japan, announced Monday morning that one women's gymnast received a positive test result Sunday and another alternate is a close contact, but did not identify the gymnasts.

Coach Al Fong also told the New York Times and USA Today that Eaker tested positive and said Leanne Wong is the gymnast who was a close contact.

Eaker told reporters in June that she is vaccinated. Wong told reporters at the Olympic Trials that she was not vaccinated.

"On Monday, the Olympic athletes moved to separate lodging accommodations and a separate training facility, as originally planned, and will continue their preparation for the Games," USA Gymnastics said in a statement.

"The entire delegation continues to be vigilant and will maintain strict protocols while they are in Tokyo."

Organizers reported Monday that 58 people -- from a group of athletes, officials and journalists linked to the Summer Games -- have tested positive for COVID-19 since July 1.

Kayla DiCello and Emma Malabuyo are the other two alternates on the Team USA women's gymnastics team.

Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Sunisa Lee and Grace McCallum will represent the United States in team events at the Summer Games. Jade Carey and MyKayla Skinner will compete as specialists.

The South African Football Association announced Sunday that soccer players Thabiso Monyane and Kamohelo Mahlatsi and video analyst Mario Masha tested positive for COVID-19 and are in isolation. South Africa also said that Rugby coach Neil Powell tested positive for COVID-19.

On Sunday, United States tennis star Cori "Coco" Gauff also announced she tested positive for COVID-19 and won't compete at the Summer Games.

The postponed 2020 Summer Games take place from July 23 to Aug. 8 in Tokyo. The Opening Ceremony is at 7 a.m. EDT Friday.
