July 9 (UPI) -- A spectator at the Scottish Open was ejected Friday after taking a golf club from Rory McIlroy's bag during the tournament.
The fan walked up to McIlroy on the 10th tee during the European Tour event, which is taking place at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick. After a failed attempt to grab McIlroy's driver, the fan removed a 6-iron club from the Northern Irishman's bag and took practice swings.
McIlroy and his caddie, Harry Diamond, looked on in confusion at the fan, who was eventually escorted away by security.
"I was surprised. Everyone saw what happened on TV," McIlroy told reporters. "It was handled efficiently and everything was OK. I had no idea who it was."

McIlroy's playing partner, Jon Rahm, said alcohol could be smelled on the spectator's breath.
"Me and Rory didn't say anything," Rahm said. "He was holding a 6-iron and I didn't want to get hurt.
"It didn't put anyone off. If anything, it put a smile on our faces. It will be a pretty good story to tell in the future."
Police in Scotland said the 35-year-old man was transported to a hospital in Edinburgh and an investigation is ongoing.
Shortly after the incident, McIlroy posted an even-par 71 in the second round and missed the cut at the tournament.
McIlroy, a four-time major winner, will compete in the 149th Open at Royal St. George's next week. Last year's Open was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
