July 7 (UPI) -- Argentinian golfer Angel Cabrera, a previous winner of the U.S. Open and Masters tournaments, was sentenced to two years in prison Wednesday on charges he assaulted his former girlfriend. Sources told Golf Digest and Argentine newspaper Clarin that Cabrera was convicted in his native province of Cordoba for assaulting, threatening and harassing Cecilia Torres Mana, who was Cabrera's partner between 2016-18.

During the trial, the 51-year-old Cabrera denied any wrongdoing. He will serve his sentence immediately.
Torres Mana was one of three women who filed charges against Cabrera. Her case was joined by Cabrera's ex-wife, Silva Rivadero, and another former partner, Micaela Escudero.
"His situation is much more complex than this. He has other charges for which there are arrest warrants, too," prosecutor Laura Battistelli told Argentine TV station Todo Noticias. "There are other victims."
The European and PGA Tour golfer traveled to the United States in July 2020 without seeking permission, which led the province of Cordoba to request his arrest.
Interpol agents arrested Cabrera in Rio de Janeiro in January on charges of assault, theft, illegal intimidation and repeated disrespect to authorities. He was extradited from Brazil to Argentina last month for his trial.
Cabrera beat Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk by one shot to win the U.S. Open at Oakmont in 2007. He also won the Masters Tournament in 2009 before losing a playoff in the same event in 2013 to Adam Scott.
