June 11 (UPI) -- Brisbane, Australia, is set to host the 2032 Summer Games due to an endorsement from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board, Olympics officials announced Friday.
"Sport is seen by many governments around the world as essential to the long-term development of their countries and regions," IOC president Thomas Bach said in a news release.
"The Brisbane 2032 Olympic project shows how forward-thinking leaders recognise the power of sport as a way to achieve lasting legacies for their communities."
A committee of 100 IOC delegates will vote for an official decision for the host city on July 21 in Tokyo.
Australia last hosted the Summer Games in 1956 in Melbourne and in 2000 in Sydney. The postponed 2020 Summer Games take place from July 23 to Aug. 8 in Tokyo. The 2022 Winter Games are Feb. 4 to 20 in Beijing.
The 2024 Summer Games are in Paris. The Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo will host the 2026 Winter Games.
Los Angeles is the host city for the 2028 Summer Games. The host city for the 2030 Winter Games will be announced in 2023.
