June 8 (UPI) -- Rickie Fowler will miss his second major tournament of 2021 after shooting one stroke over the cut line and failing to qualify for the U.S. Open at a tournament Tuesday at Brookside Golf & Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.
Fowler, who also missed April's Masters tournament, played five holes as part of a resumed round after a rain delay. He needed three birdies to earn one of the 16 qualifier spots out of the 120-player field in Columbus.
He carded birdies on Nos. 14 and 16, but made par on Nos. 15, 17 and 18. He finished with a 5-under par 66.
Peter Malnati, Pierceson Coody, Tom Hoge and Jhonattan Vegas each carded scores of 6-under par and qualified out of a five-player playoff. Padraig Harrington, Keegan Bradley and Jason Dufner were among the 11 players who tied Fowler at 5-under par.

Fowler last missed the U.S. Open in 2010. The 2021 version will be just his second missed major tournament since the 2010 British Open.
Golfers can qualify for the U.S. Open through various avenues. The Top-60 players in the Official World Golf Ranking, recent major winners and those granted special exemptions from the USGA are among those who qualify for the major tournament.
Phil Mickelson, who automatically qualified with a win on May 23 at the PGA Championship, joked that he would give his previously-granted U.S. Open exemption entry to Fowler.
"I hereby designate my [no longer necessary] exemption to Rickie," Mickelson tweeted Monday.
Fowler is No. 87 in the Official World Golf Ranking. He tied for 8th at the 2021 PGA Championship and tied for 49th at the 2020 U.S. Open.
Fowler's resume features three second-place finishes, but no victories in 44 major tournament appearances.
His last win on the PGA Tour came at the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open. The U.S. Open, which features a 156-player field, is June 17 to 20 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego.
Bryson DeChambeau is the defending champion.
