June 7 (UPI) -- Nick Saban and the University of Alabama agreed to an extension Monday, which keeps the legendary football coach under contract through the 2028 season, the school announced.

"Terry [my wife] and I are pleased and happy to sign another contract extension that will keep us in Tuscaloosa through the end of our career," Saban said in a news release.

"Our family calls Tuscaloosa and the state of Alabama home. It's a place where our roots now run deep."

Saban, 69, passed former Alabama Paul "Bear" Bryant for the most national titles (seven) in history when he led the Crimson Tide to a win over Ohio State in the College Football Playoff National Championship game Jan. 11 in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Saban won his first title in 2004 at LSU. Since 2007, he has led the Crimson Tide to another six national titles.

The Crimson Tide are 170-23 in 14 seasons under Saban. The team tied a record with six players picked in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Saban will receive a base salary and talent fee of $8.425 million next season. That will increase annually throughout the length of the contract. Saban will receive an additional $800,000 at the end of the season from 2022 through 2025.

Alabama will play Miami in the first game of the 2021-22 season at 3:30 p.m. EDT Sept. 4 at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
