Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Auburn University was fined $250,000 for fans storming the football field following an upset of the rival Alabama Crimson Tide.
The Southeastern Conference announced the fine Monday. The Tigers beat Alabama 48-45 in a thrilling edition of the Iron Bowl Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala. Fans flooded the field following the final whistle, celebrating the victory over the favored in-state rival.
The SEC stated Auburn's hefty fine was on account of a fourth violation of the conference's policy prohibiting postgame fan access to the competition area.
A first violation of the policy results in a $50,000 fine. The second fine is for $100,000. Additional violations come with a $250,000 price tag. Auburn has now paid the SEC a total of $650,000 for violations of the policy, which was implemented in 2004 and updated in 2015.
The Tigers' last $250,000 fine came in 2017 after upsetting Alabama. Money from the fines are deposited into the SEC post-graduate scholarship fund.
Auburn (9-3) finished the season on a two-game winning streak. The Crimson Tied (10-2) lost two of their final four games to drop out of the College Football Playoff picture.
