Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Serena Williams started shaky but quickly grabbed control to defeat Elina Svitolina and seal a spot in the 2019 U.S. Open final.

The eighth-seeded Williams cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the No. 5-seeded Svitolina of Ukraine in their semifinal match Thursday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

Williams' victory to reach the U.S. Open final marks her fourth trip to a final in the last six major tournaments. She was the runner-up at Flushing Meadows last year, losing to Naomi Osaka.

Williams, who competed in her 38th Grand Slam semifinal Thursday, is seeking her 24th career Grand Slam singles title, which will equal the record held by Margaret Court.

"It's just impressive, I guess," Williams said during her on-court interview. "I don't think about it. I just come out here and do what I can."

Williams will play No. 13 Belinda Bencic or 15th-seeded Bianca Andreescu in Saturday's final.
