July 29 (UPI) -- Egan Bernal, 22, became the first Colombian to win the Tour de France and the youngest to do so in more than a century.

"This is the Tour, this is the Tour, there is nothing more important than the Tour de France and I want to take this jersey back to Colombia," Bernal said.

Bernal finished 1 minute, 11 seconds ahead of teammate Geraint Thomas. He finished 15th in last year's Tour de France.

"I think I should say thank you to all my team, thank you 'G' [Thomas] for the opportunity and all the team for their support and belief in me," said Bernal.

Bernal is the youngest Tour de France winner since Francois Faber, who was 22 when he won the race in 1909.

Bernal also won the white jersey for top placed rider under 25.
