U.S. Open: Gary Woodland wins first major championship

June 16 (UPI) -- Gary Woodland finished at 13-under par and won the 119th U.S. Open at Pebble Beach to capture his first major championship.

Woodland sank a long putt for birdie on the 18th hole to shoot a 2-under 69 on Sunday, holding off defending U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka by three strokes.

"It was special. I never let myself get ahead and I never really thought the tournament was over," Woodland said. "Once that [putt] went in, it all kind of came out of me. It was special to finish it off here at Pebble Beach."

Koepka, who was attempting to become the first player since Willie Anderson (1905) to win three straight U.S. Opens, carded a 68 in the final round. He was the first player to shoot in the 60s in all four rounds of the tournament and lose.

Justin Rose, who won the 2013 U.S. Open, paired with Woodland on the final day but dropped out of contention on the back nine after making bogeys on the 12th, 13th and 15th holes. He finished in a tie for third at 7-under par with Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele and Chez Reavie.

Adam Scott and Louis Oosthuizen tied for seventh place at 6-under par. Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson and Chesson Hadley each were 5-under par and tied for ninth.

Tiger Woods, making his 21st career appearance in a U.S. Open, shot a 69 on Sunday and finished at 2-under in the tournament. He was tied for 21st.

Rickie Fowler carded a 72 in the final round and was 2-over par for a share of 43rd. Phil Mickelson finished in a tie for 52nd at 4-over par. Jordan Spieth (+6) shot a 76 on the last day and tied for 65th.
