May 15 (UPI) -- Former Seattle Seahawks Jon Ryan has signed with his hometown Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL, the team announced.

Ryan, 36, played 12 seasons in the NFL. He spent 2008 to 2017 with the Seahawks and holds several of their punting records.

Ryan became the first person from Saskatchewan to win the Super Bowl when the Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos in 2014.

The Roughriders play in Regina, where Ryan was born and played college football. He played two seasons with the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 2004 to 2005.

Ryan did not play in the NFL last year. Ryan told reporters Tuesday he does not believe he will play in the NFL again.

"At the end of the day, it was just time to come home," Ryan said. "There were some other options, but in my head, this was really the only one I wanted to do."

The Roughriders begin their 2019 season at the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on June 13.
