Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Jimmy Gressier's win didn't go quite as planned, as he face planted into mud at the finish of the Under-23 European men's cross country championships.

The flopping finale occurred on Sunday in Tilburg, Netherlands. Footage was posted on Twitter by European Athletics and quickly went viral, sparking a flurry of memes.

Gressier, 21. grabbed two French flags as he sprinted down the stretch toward the final banner. He waved the flags in each hand before deciding to go to his knees for a celebratory slide.

But instead of sliding, Gressier's knees sank in the mud. He immediately went down, with his upper body crashing to the ground and his head drilling the banner, which did not break.

Gressier defended his title by winning the race with a time of 23:37. Germany's Samuel Fitwi finished second, followed by France's Hugo Hay, Ireland's Ryan Forsyth and Great Britain and Northern Ireland's Patrick Dever. Forsyth was born in the United States.
