U.S. luger Emily Sweeney involved in scary crash in Pyeongchang

Feb. 13 (UPI) -- U.S. Olympian Emily Sweeney was involved in a frightening crash Tuesday on the luge track in Pyeongchang, spinning out of control during the women's singles final.

Sweeney, 24, was on her fourth run when she tumbled down the track at turn No. 9 and crashed.

Amid concerned silence from the crowd, the American luger got up and walked herself off the track. She was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

"I'm fine," Sweeney said as she got into an ambulance.

"It's pretty brutal, but I wanted to get the last word. It's pretty crushing," she said after the crash.

"I know I have a lot of support and I'm sorry that's how it ended."

The competition was briefly stopped, but resumed a short time later.

Pyeongchang is Sweeney's first Olympics after missing the Sochi Games in 2014. She is also a sergeant in the U.S. military.

When asked if she would return and make another run at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, Sweeney was unsure.

"That's the golden question. I don't know. We'll see," she said.
