Oct. 7 (UPI) -- A week after returning to Congress for the first time since he was nearly killed in a June shooting, Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., threw out the first pitch of the National League Division Series.
Just before the game between the Chicago Cubs and the Washington Nationals began Friday night, Scalise -- standing with the aid of a walker -- threw a strike to U.S. Capitol Police officer David Bailey.
James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Ill.,shot Scalise and others as Scalise and his Republican colleagues practiced for the upcoming Congressional Baseball Game charity event. Capitol Police officers Bailey and Crystal Griner, injured themselves and there on behalf of Scalise, the House Majority Whip, helped dissolve the situation at the Alexandria, Va., park and Hodgkinson was killed.
Speaking to a packed House floor last Thursday, Scalise thanked those responders and described his path to recovery. He had been shot in the hip and was in critical condition, undergoing surgeries for weeks.
"As you can imagine these last three and-a-half months have been pretty challenging times for me and my family," Scalise told his colleagues on the House floor last Thursday.
