U.S. Open: Wrist to keep Milos Raonic out of action

Canadian Milos Raonic announced over social media that he will not compete in the upcoming U.S. Open because of pain in his left wrist.

Raonic, who is ranked 11th in the world, had withdrawn from the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati last week because of the injury.

"I have tried everything in my power to rehabilitate this injury in time for the U.S. Open in order to play an event that is so truly special to me," Raonic posted on Instagram Wednesday night. "However, the pain is too great and, in consultation with my doctors, I am left with no option but to withdraw from the event."

Raonic noted that he underwent a procedure Wednesday "to remove portions of the bone that have been causing the discomfort and preventing me from being able to play the way I normally can."

The 26-year-old Ontario native admitted his wrist was ailing after dropping a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in a second-round match of the Rogers Cup in Montreal two weeks ago.

Raonic has posted a 28-11 mark in 2017, but has yet to win a tournament.

He joins fellow top men's players Serb Novak Djokovic, defending champion Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland and Japan's Kei Nishikori in missing out on the season's final major.
