Angel Hernandez, who sued Major League Baseball this week alleging race discrimination, was named on Thursday as one of the umpires for the upcoming All-Star Game in Miami.

Hernandez will serve as a first-base umpire on a crew headed by Joe West, who was behind the plate for the 2005 All-Star Game. West, who also worked the Midsummer Classic in 1987, became the third umpire in history to work his 5,000th career game in June.

A big-league umpire since 1993, Hernandez, 55, alleges in his lawsuit that MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre purposely kept him from working World Series games in the last decade and from being promoted to a crew chief.

The suit alleges violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Ohio state law.

Hernandez, born in Cuba and now a Florida resident, claims Torre "has a history of animosity towards Hernandez stemming from his time as manager of the New York Yankees."

The rest of the crew for Tuesday's All-Star Game includes Mark Carlson (second base), Chris Conroy (third base), Manny Gonzalez (left field) and Mike Estabrook (right field). The replay umpire in New York will be Doug Eddings.

Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash will join the American League staff. Cash is in his third season with Tampa Bay and will be making his All-Star coaching debut.

Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly will be among the National League coaches. Mattingly was a six-time All-Star for the Yankees and is in his second season at the held in Miami.
