South Koreans share lead at Women's PGA

Chella Choi and Amy Yang, both of South Korea, share the lead after the weather-shortened first day of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship on Thursday.

Choi, who had seven birdies and just two bogeys, completed her round shooting 5-under-par 66, while Yang was 5 under through 17 holes before play was suspended in Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club because of lightning.

Joanna Klatten of France and Brittany Altomare are tied for third a stroke back. Altomare completed her round, while Klatten was through 16 when play was suspended.

Michelle Wie and Canada's Brooke Henderson are among a pack of six tied for fifth a 3 under.

The 19-year-old Henderson is the defending champ at the Women's PGA, having taken the title last year in a playoff with Lydia Ko at Sahalee in Washington.

"I hit my driver great at times and I hit a couple of loose ones," Henderson said. "I was able to carry a couple of fairway bunkers, which is huge, because not a lot of players are able to do that. I was able to take them out of play and then give myself a short shot into the greens."

Henderson made five birdies and two bogeys, and her average drive was 273 yards.

"I was going to try to take it a day at a time and see what happens," Henderson said. "But I'm in a great spot right now, so I'm really excited. Minus 3 on this tough course, and these tough conditions, you know, it's a great way to start out this championship."

Wei, who also had five birdies and two bogeys, stroked her ninth consecutive score in the 60s and matched the highest score in the stretch. She finished tied for fourth, tied for second and tied for third in her past three events. She went out in 37 on Thursday, then stormed back in 31.

"Just had a lot of fun in tough conditions," she said. "It was tough out there but kind of have to laugh off the mistakes a little bit out here. I mean, it's a tough golf course. Olympia Fields is a really pure golf course. It's playing great right now."
