Tim Tebow made what was likely his last spring training game with the New York Mets a memorable one, collecting a pair of hits in three at-bats Wednesday.

Tebow, who also made a leaping catch in right field, had his first multiple-hit game as the Mets lost 6-2 to the Miami Marlins at Jupiter, Fla. He improved to 3-for-14 (.214) in Grapefruit League action.

However, the former Heisman Trophy winner at the University of Florida is likely headed for a demotion with minor league play set to get underway Thursday.

"He's getting better. That was the point," said Mets manager Terry Collins, who told reporters that Tebow likely will not return to the major league club this spring. "That's why he's here, to see if he can make some strides, and he's made some very good strides."

Tebow, trying to make the transition from NFL quarterback to professional baseball, had an infield hit to shortstop and lined a single to center field.

"It's an awesome opportunity," Tebow said of his stint with the Mets. "I am trying to make the most of it as far as a learning opportunity. Learn from as many of the guys and coaches as possible and try to absorb as much knowledge as possible."

Tebow, 29, signed a $100,000 minor league contract with the Mets on Sept. 8 after holding a workout in Los Angeles with 46 scouts in attendance.
