March 12 (UPI) -- The college basketball teams that just missed out on making the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament heard their names called Sunday evening to play in the National Invitation Tournament.

The 32-team tournament announced its field a short time after the other 68 schools were revealed for the NCAA's primary bracket.

The teams that received a No. 1 seed for the NIT were California, Syracuse, Illinois State and Iowa -- four schools that were hoping to make the NCAA's field instead.

Perhaps the most interesting first round matchup set by the NIT selection committee is UNC Greensboro traveling to Syracuse. Last week, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim roundly criticized the city of Greensboro, N.C., during the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. Boeheim dismissed the city in saying the annual tournament should be held in a larger media market.

"Kudos NIT on having a sense of humor. Well played!" the city tweeted after the matchup was revealed.

The tournament will be broadcast on ESPN networks and run through March 30. The final two rounds are held in New York City.
