Police investigating alleged rape of 16-year-old at Kansas Jayhawks basketball dorm

Kansas coach Bill Self on Thursday addressed an ongoing investigation of an alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl at the dorm housing the men's basketball team.

No charges have been filed and the alleged victim hasn't been identified in the mid-December altercation at McCarthy Hall, but five members of the Jayhawks were listed as witnesses on the police report.

The five players listed as witnesses in the police report are guards Frank Mason III, Lagerald Vick, Tucker Vang and Josh Jackson as well as forward Mitch Lightfoot. A Kansas athletic department administrator and two 19-year-old women were interviewed, according to the police report.

"All I know is what I said yesterday (on his weekly "Hawk Tawk" radio show)," Self said on the Big 12 coaches teleconference on Thursday. "There's an alleged incident that took place there and the people that are listed are potential witnesses in some way."

Self said that he would not say anything more on the matter and planned to leave the rest to university officials or the Kansas University police department.

"That's all we know at this point," Self said. "I'm not going to minimize it at all because it's such a serious potential allegation that took place in McCarthy Hall, but I'm also not going to draw something from it that in no way, shape or form have we been told is there right now."

The second-ranked Jayhawks, who dropped an 85-69 decision to West Virginia on Tuesday, had played Davidson in Kansas City on Dec. 17 -- the night of the alleged assault.

In addition to the rape allegation, the police report cites other alleged crimes such as contributing to a child's misconduct, furnishing alcohol to a minor and possession of drug paraphernalia. Another police report at the same location on the same day and time involved a runaway.

McCarthy Hall is an all-male on-campus building that houses 40 students, including the men's basketball team as well as an assortment of upperclassmen and transfer students.
