Former North Carolina and Miami football coach Butch Davis agreed to a five-year deal to become Florida International's head coach, ESPN's Brett McMurphy reported Monday.

Davis had a 51-20 record while coaching the Miami Hurricanes from 1995 to 2000. From there, Davis became head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2001, but he was fired after four seasons and a 24-35 record.

Davis was hired as North Carolina's head coach in 2007 and went 28-23 in four seasons. However, Davis was fired before the 2011 season while North Carolina was under investigation by the NCAA for possible improper benefits and academic misconduct within the program.

FIU fired Ron Turner as its head coach earlier this season after posting a 10-30 record with the Panthers. Ron Cooper became interim head coach and FIU is 3-7 this season.
