Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman was fined $9,115 by the NFL for his hit on Buffalo Bills kicker Dan Carpenter during Monday night's game.

The altercation came after Sherman jumped offside prior to the snap on a field-goal attempt. Sherman received the hit to his wallet due to the predetermined schedule of penalties for on-field infractions.

Sherman did not receive a penalty on the field, however, although NFL senior vice president of officiating tweeted during the game that he should have been flagged for unnecessary roughness for the hit that transpired after officials failed to stop the play.

In a zany sequence with three seconds left in the first half, Sherman jumped offside and attempted to block a field-goal attempt from Carpenter. Sherman reached down to hit the ball out of the hold of Colton Schmidt. In the process of attempting the block, Sherman careened into Carpenter, leaving the Bills' kicker briefly injured.

"I tried to block the kick," Sherman said following the game. "I went for the ball, the holder still had it. I didn't hear a whistle. They say play until the blow of the whistle. So I went and tried to block the kick and I got it. I think I got a piece of it and somehow the kicker kept going. I assumed he was going to stop when he saw me going for the ball but he didn't."

Carpenter was forced to leave the game for one play due to trainers coming on the field to attend to him and Buffalo not having any timeouts remaining. After a timing error by officials led to a delay of game penalty, the Bills had to quickly spike the ball to allow Carpenter a chance to return to the field. In the end, Carpenter missed a 54-yard field-goal try.

Officially, Sherman was flagged for offside and the play was blown dead for being unabated into the backfield. Therefore, no roughing the kicker penalty was possible due to it being a dead ball.
