Kansas City Chiefs' QB Alex Smith to start against Carolina Panthers

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith will start next weekend at the Carolina Panthers after missing this past Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a concussion, coach Andy Reid announced Monday.

"He'll be back in as long as there are no setbacks," Reid told reporters.

Nick Foles started at quarterback against Jacksonville, going 20-for-33 with a touchdown in a narrow 19-14 win.

Smith was ruled out against the Jaguars last Wednesday after hitting his head on the turf twice during a 30-14 win against the Colts on Oct. 30. Smith threw for 127 yards (9 of 19) and a touchdown in the victory.

The former No. 1 overall pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2005 ranks 27th in the NFL this season in passing yardage (1,638) and is tied for 25th with eight touchdown passes.

Smith, 32, is in his 11th season and fourth with the Chiefs.
