Milos Raonic beats Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets

Fourth-seeded Milos Raonic recorded 17 aces to post a 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory over Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta on Tuesday to advance to the third round of the Paris Masters.

The 25-year-old Canadian, who was a runner-up to top-ranked Novak Djokovic two years ago at this tournament, won 41 of 42 first-serve points to dispatch Carreno Busta in 1 hour, 14 minutes.

Raonic is working his way past an ankle injury in his bid to get into top form this week ahead of the year-end championships, which are held in London from Nov. 13-20. The top eight players at the end of this week will qualify for the season finale.

"I need to go flat out because I've struggled, I think, now for the better part of a couple months," Raonic said. "There is no working your way into it come two weeks. You got to play against the top players right away from the beginning. It's about really putting in those gritty moments here to lead into that."

Seventh-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych also benefited from a strong service game, collecting 14 aces to advance to the third round with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Portugal's Joao Sousa.

The 31-year-old Berdych, who was the 2005 Paris Masters champion, faces either 10th-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut or Gilles Simon.

Also on Tuesday, 12th-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet recorded a 6-4, 7-6 (11) victory over American Steve Johnson.

John Isner reached the second round by beating Mischa Zverev 7-6 (8), 6-4. Isner will face 15th-seeded David Ferrer, who has defeated the American in seven of eight career encounters.
