The Kansas City Chiefs have brought in Bishop Sankey as an insurance policy on fellow running back Jamaal Charles, who visited orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews on Monday to evaluate his knees.

"Congrats to Bishop Sankey on signing with Kansas City! Great opportunity and very well deserved," Sankey's agent Jason Bernstein tweeted Tuesday morning.

Sankey, 24, is entering his third NFL season after playing two seasons with the Tennessee Titans.

He was the first running back selected in the 2014 draft at No. 54 overall in the second round by the Titans, the latest for a back in draft history.

In 29 games, Sankey accumulated 762 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 199 carries and caught 32 passes for 272 yards and a score.

On Sept. 2, the Titans released Sankey as part of their final roster cuts. He signed with New England Patriots' practice squad three days later.

Charles, meanwhile, is working his way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament he sustained last season. He was held out of the Chiefs' 30-14 win over the Indianapolis Colts this past Sunday with swelling in his knee.

"We just can't get that thing to where it needs to be for him to play," Kansas City coach Andy Reid said Sunday.
