ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- After reviewing the cheap shot leveled by Miami's Jarvis Landry on Buffalo safety Aaron Williams last Sunday, Bills coach Rex Ryan was seriously upset and railed against the play and the NFL for allowing it to continue to happen.

Williams was sent to a Miami hospital in the second quarter when Landry smashed him in the head on a vicious and dirty crack-back block. It was determined that Williams did not suffer a concussion, but he does have a neck injury.

This is a player who missed 13 games last season with a serious neck injury that required surgery and put his career in jeopardy.

"Did he target? Did he launch? Yeah, he did all those, check every box you want," Ryan said. "Was it a dirty hit? Yeah. It was unnecessary ... and unsportsmanlike. I thought the officials got it right; it was unnecessary roughness.

"A football play, he came in for a crack block, but there was nothing physical about it. I was surprised he did it and I'm absolutely disappointed. Now I have a player who's in jeopardy. I don't understand it."

Ryan said the NFL might have to consider what college football does in ejecting players who are deemed to have targeted an opponent's head. In this case, Landry would have surely been thrown out of the game.

"The college game may have it right," Ryan said. "I also like that they (college) view it on video. I'm not saying for every unnecessary roughness because there are plenty of guys trying to block a pass and (inadvertently) hit a quarterback in the head. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking blatant shots. If we really want to protect our players, then we need to look at things in the future."
