Novak Djokovic reaches Shanghai quarterfinals

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic continued his dominance at the Shanghai Masters and reached the quarterfinals of the tournament on Thursday by posting a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Canadian Vasek Pospisil.

Djokovic showed no signs of the elbow injury that he caused him to pull out of the China Open and improved to 26-3 in the tournament. The 29-year-old Serb is vying for his fourth championship in Shanghai (2012-13, 2015).

"I thought it was a great quality of tennis today from both players," said Djokovic, who will face German qualifier Mischa Zverev in the quarterfinals. "I was very pleased with the way I played from the first to last point. I don't think I dropped my level at all.

"And on the other side, Vasek was serving very well. It was really hard to read his serve. He was hitting the spots beautifully. He was putting a lot of power in that. Just when I needed to read his serve and play well, I did. It was enough: one break in both sets."

Great Britain's Andy Murray was also impressive, winning 21 of 22 points on his first serve to breeze to a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over 13th-seeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille. Murray, who won the China Open, has won his last eight matches in straight sets.

While those two favorites were victorious, U.S. Open champion Stan Wawrinka, fifth-seed Canadian Milos Raonic and sixth-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils were not as fortunate.

Wawrinka, the Switzerland native seeded third in the tournament, committed 43 unforced errors in a 6-4, 6-4 setback to Gilles Simon of France.

American Jack Sock reached his first Masters-level quarterfinal by saving a pair of match points in the tiebreaker to post an 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8) win over Raonic.

Monfils was upended by 11th-ranked German David Goffin, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Also on Thursday, Zverev secured a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Spaniard Marcel Granollers. Zverev's younger brother, Alexander, was unable to join him in the quarterfinals after dropping a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-5 decision to ninth-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Fifteenth-seeded Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut recorded a 6-3, 6-3 win over Serbian Viktor Troicki.
