New Orleans Pelicans star Anthony Davis suffered a sprained right ankle injury in Wednesday's preseason game in Beijing and could possibly miss the season opener.

Davis is expected to be out 10-15 days after suffering a Grade 2 ankle sprain against the Houston Rockets, a source told ESPN's The Undefeated.

Davis was injured when he stepped on the foot of Rockets center Nene with 6:37 left to play in the first quarter of Houston's 116-104 victory. Davis re-entered the game briefly but soon walked to the locker room. He made 1 of 5 shots for two points before the injury occurred.

The 23-year-old Davis declined comment and wore a boot on his injured foot as he walked out of the arena for the team's flight back to New Orleans, according to ESPN. His injury could sideline him for the Pelicans' season opener on Oct. 26 against the Denver Nuggets.

''I know it's an ankle sprain,'' Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry told reporters in China after the game. ''Not sure what grade it is. I haven't talked to the trainers yet."

Davis had season-ending surgery in March to fix a stress reaction problem in his left knee cap that forced him to miss the final 21 games of the regular season. Davis also suffered a torn labrum last season that did not require surgery on his left shoulder.

The 6-foot-10, 253-pound Davis, the first overall pick of the 2012 draft, averaged 24.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 2.0 blocks in 61 games last season.
