New York Mets left-hander Steven Matz was scratched from his scheduled start on Friday against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies and is unlikely to pitch again this season.

Matz, who has been on the disabled list since Aug. 23 because of a left shoulder impingement, threw a 20-pitch bullpen session Wednesday but reported soreness Thursday. Rookie right-hander Gabriel Ynoa will start on Friday in the second contest of a four-game series.

"When you're talking about the shoulder, you're talking serious territory," manager Terry Collins said of the 25-year-old Matz, who owns a 9-8 mark with a 3.40 ERA this season.

It is the second time this homestand that a Mets pitcher has been scratched the day before he was supposed to return.

Right-hander Jacob deGrom, who last pitched Sept. 1, was expected to return on Sunday before his elbow injury flared up again. He underwent season-ending surgery to reposition the ulnar nerve on Wednesday.

Ynoa allowed one run and struck out eight in 4 2/3 innings against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.
