Jameis Winston, DeAngelo Williams earn Player of Week honors

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston has been named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 1 and Pittsburgh Steelers running back DeAngelo Williams took the AFC honor.

Winston, earning his first career Player of the Week Award, completed 23 of 33 passes for 281 yards, with four touchdowns and a passer rating of 122.6 in a 31-24 victory at the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

Williams had 26 carries for 143 yards and two touchdowns in the Steelers' 38-16 win over the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football. He added six receptions for 28 yards. Williams has stepped in as the starter with Le'Veon Bell serving a three-game suspension to open the season.

The NFL also announced Wednesday that Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Kendricks was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week with Houston Texans outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus taking the AFC honor.

Kendricks secured his first career interception and returned it 77 yards for his first career touchdown in the 26-15 win at the Tennessee Titans. According to the coaches tally, Kendricks also posted seven tackles (five solo), including one tackle for loss.

Mercilus recorded four tackles, two sacks, two quarterback hits, one tackle for loss and one forced fumble in Houston's 23-14 victory against the Chicago Bears.

New England Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski was been named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week and Detroit Lions punter Sam Martin took the NFC honor.

Gostkowski converted both extra points and all three field-goal attempts (47, 53 and 32) in Sunday's 23-21 road victory over the Arizona Cardinals. It is the fourth time in his career that Gostkowski has been named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. He has also been named Special Teams Player of the Month three times -- October 2008, October 2009 and September 2015.

Martin punted four times for a 58.8-yard gross average and a 55.5-yard net average In the Lions' 39-35 win on the road against the Indianapolis Colts. His performance also included two punts downed inside the 20-yard line.
