The New Orleans Saints released running back C.J. Spiller, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday.

Spiller was a healthy scratch for this past weekend's season opener against the Oakland Raiders.

Spiller played in 13 games, including two starts, for the Saints last season. He rushed 36 times for 112 yards and caught 34 passes for 239 yards.

The 29-year-old signed a four-year, $16 million deal with New Orelans as free agency in early 2015.

Spiller has been used primarily as a pass receiver than a runner in recent years.

His best overall season was with the Buffalo Bills in 2012, when he rushed for 1,244 yards and caught 43 passes for 459 yards.

The Saints' leading rusher in their loss to the Raiders on Sunday was Mark Ingram, who ran for 58 yards on 12 carries. No other New Orleans player had more than four carries.
